Al Michaels Faces Renewed Calls for Retirement After On-Air Blunder

Veteran announcer Al Michaels, 81, is once again facing calls for retirement from NFL fans following a perceived blunder during Amazon Prime's Thursday Night Football broadcast on October 29, 2026. The incident occurred just moments into the Green Bay Packers versus Carolina Panthers matchup when the Packers fumbled the ball on the opening play.

After Coleman Owens fielded the kickoff, the ball was stripped and recovered by the Panthers. Michaels appeared to be slow in recognizing the turnover, prompting immediate criticism on social media platforms. Users on X (formerly Twitter) expressed their dismay, with comments such as 'Al Michaels didn't even realize' and 'Al Michaels has lost his fast ball.' Many fans cited a perceived delay in his reactions to live plays and a lack of sharpness, urging him to step down from his broadcasting role.

This is not the first time Michaels has been subjected to scrutiny regarding his performance in the booth in recent seasons. Increased criticism this year has focused on an apparent lack of enthusiasm and a rise in errors during his play-by-play calls.

Despite the fan outcry, Michaels has indicated he intends to continue announcing until he is either asked to step down or feels it is the right time himself. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show earlier in October, Michaels stated that his future is a collaborative decision with his employers at Amazon and Prime Video, whom he described as 'fantastic.' He has been approaching his career year-by-year since his initial three-year contract, signed in 2022, concluded.

Michaels reflected that if Amazon feels it's time to move on, he would accept that decision gracefully, acknowledging his long tenure. 'I've done the NFL for 41 years, which is half my life. Love it. But you know what? At a certain time, it's time,' he said.

Michaels' broadcasting career began in 1971. He is famously known for calling the 'Miracle on Ice' during the 1980 Winter Olympics and has been a national NFL announcer since 1986, starting with ABC's Monday Night Football. He joined NBC in 2006 before moving to Amazon Prime Video when the company acquired the rights to Thursday Night Football in 2022.
