Agent Warns NFL Teams of Quarterback Depth Risk Amid Injury Surge

Legendary sports agent Leigh Steinberg is urging NFL teams to prioritize depth at the quarterback position, warning that teams failing to keep at least three quarterbacks on their roster are jeopardizing their season and Super Bowl aspirations. As of Week 3, five starting quarterbacks have already sustained injuries, with the New York Giants' Jaxson Dart being ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. Steinberg highlighted the critical nature of the quarterback position, stating that teams with only two quarterbacks are making a significant mistake due to the high likelihood of injury. He pointed to the Giants' situation with Dart and backup Jameis Winston as an example. If Winston were to be injured after Dart's season-ending injury, the Giants would be left without a viable option on their active roster.

Steinberg acknowledged that the increasing salary cap and rising quarterback salaries make it challenging for teams to invest heavily in backup options. However, he stressed that the physical nature of the game, with larger and stronger defensive players, makes quarterbacks particularly vulnerable to injury. "The position starts with that player, so all the action coalesces around him, and there's just more opportunity to get hit and hurt," Steinberg said.
