Adelaide Crows player Josh Worrell has been charged with aggravated driving without due care and failing to present to police within 90 minutes following an incident on July 10. The 25-year-old defender was reportedly driving to training about 8:30 a.m. when the collision occurred.
Footage appears to show Worrell's vehicle striking a pedestrian crossing Port Road in Adelaide's Woodville suburb. Following the incident, Worrell stopped his vehicle, exited, and provided aid to the man.
South Australian Police confirmed the charges on Wednesday. A statement indicated that Worrell would be summonsed to appear in court at a later date. If found guilty, the charges carry a maximum penalty of imprisonment.
In a notable development, South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens acknowledged a potential conflict of interest due to his position as an Adelaide Crows board member. Stevens stated that strict protocols are in place to manage such situations, determining whether he is briefed on cases involving the club.
Crows coach Matthew Nicks commented on the situation Tuesday, describing it as a "challenging few days" for Worrell and affirming the club's support for the player as he navigates the aftermath of the accident.
