Adam Peaty secured first place in his Men's 50m Breaststroke Heat at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday, but the victory was accompanied by visible emotion, highlighting the strain of a public family feud.
Peaty, 28, finished the race in 27.27 seconds, narrowly beating fellow Brit Filip Nowacki. His pregnant wife, Holly Ramsay-Peaty, 26, was present to cheer him on, showcasing her baby bump. This win followed his third-place finish in the 100m Breaststroke final on Saturday.
Despite the on-field success, Peaty tearfully addressed the ongoing family conflict in a post-swim interview. He acknowledged that the fallout has taken a significant toll, stating, "It's hard because I know how hard I've worked... It does take a toll."
The dispute reportedly began in 2024 when Peaty and Ramsay-Peaty did not invite extended family members to their engagement party and wedding. Peaty's mother, Caroline, who previously supported his training, was also reportedly not invited to Ramsay-Peaty's hen do.
Peaty had previously commented on the feud via Instagram, suggesting there are "two sides to every story." Reports indicate that his pregnant sister, Bethany, who was the only family member reportedly still in contact with the couple, has also fallen out with Ramsay-Peaty.
Sources close to Peaty's mother have stated she is heartbroken about being banned from watching her son compete. Peaty himself expressed his frustration with his performance, questioning the purpose of his rigorous training regimen if it does not lead to his desired results. "What's the point of all the 5.30am starts? What's the point of all the metres every single day?" he asked.
He added that he has made difficult decisions in recent months to focus on his career, including ignoring online criticism. "Enough is enough. This goes beyond sport. It's about being decent people. We all have to do better," he said.
Peaty's decision to use the double-barrelled surname Ramsay-Peaty for the Games, with Ramsay listed first, is seen by some estranged family members as another slight. Some sources have commented that while Peaty may have wealth, they possess loyalty, integrity, and family, suggesting fame is fleeting while family endures.
