Adam Peaty, the reigning Olympic champion and world record holder in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, expressed confusion and disappointment following his bronze medal finish in the 50m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games. Peaty touched the wall in 26.94 seconds, finishing 0.44 seconds behind winner Ben Williamson.
"I thought I could have done better there," Peaty stated after the race. "It is quite disappointing in terms of the time, and, as we know, times equal medals. I felt I could have been a little quicker, but I need to look at it and see where it is going on because nothing makes sense this week to be honest."
Peaty, who has held an unbeaten streak in the 100m breaststroke for eight years prior to this event, had previously indicated that the 50m distance would be his best opportunity for a medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, citing his age.
He began training with Lisa Bates in London after the Paris 2024 Olympics, having previously worked under coach Mel Marshall, who relocated to Australia in 2024. Peaty had been training at Repton in Derbyshire before moving back to London.
"I am very, very happy, couldn't be happier with where I am training now," Peaty said. "It is hard work, but we need to make sure that hard work is going in the right place. These things don't happen in three months; they happen in two years and we need to make sure we keep investing."
