Cristo Fernández, known for his role as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso,” has officially transitioned from fiction to professional soccer. The 35-year-old actor made his debut for USL Championship club El Paso Locomotive FC on Saturday, coming on as a late substitute in their 2-0 loss to New Mexico United.

Fernández entered the match in the 79th minute, fulfilling a lifelong ambition that predates his acting career. His character on “Ted Lasso,” the energetic Mexican striker Rojas, became a fan favorite known for his catchphrase, “Football is life!” Fernández appeared in all three seasons of the comedy and is expected to return for a potential fourth season.

Before his acting career, Fernández played in the youth system of Tecos FC in Guadalajara, Mexico. However, a knee injury in his teenage years ended his aspirations of a professional playing career, leading him to pivot to acting. He studied in both Mexico and England before securing the role on “Ted Lasso.”

Fernández's passion for soccer remained strong, and he continued to pursue the sport. "It’s a dream come true, it’s hard to put into words," he told ESPN previously. "It has been lots of hard work."

Earlier this year, Fernández trained with Chicago Fire II before signing with El Paso Locomotive. He acknowledged that his acting career might have contributed to his opportunity but emphasized his commitment to proving himself on the field. "At the end of the day, I can tell you anything, but the only thing that’s going to prove anything will be me on the pitch and the performance and what I bring on the field," he said to ESPN. "I also understand who I am, and that a big part of why I’m here can also be related to my work in other fields … [but] this is real life."
