Los Angeles Rams General Manager Les Snead indicated that Aaron Donald is seriously contemplating a return to the NFL, a significant shift from his retired status. Snead, in an appearance on Post Sport’s Schein Time, stated that Donald has developed a competitive drive reminiscent of the period before the Rams' Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season.
"This is the first time that he’s had an itch, right, to scratch that football itch and maybe come back and do something meaningful," Snead said. This sentiment marks a departure from Donald’s mindset when he announced his retirement in March 2024, after a decade with the Rams.
At the time of his retirement, the 32-year-old Donald expressed feelings of completion and burnout. "I’m complete, I’m full," he stated then. "I think the passion to play the game is no longer there for me." He acknowledged his love for football but cited a lack of desire to endure another demanding training camp and 17-game regular season, preferring to focus on his next career phase.
Donald’s career accolades include three Defensive Player of the Year awards, 10 Pro Bowl selections, and seven consecutive first-team All-Pro nods. He was also instrumental in the Rams securing their Super Bowl title, notably by pressuring Joe Burrow on a pivotal fourth down.
Snead believes that for the first time since the Rams' championship celebration, Donald might be missing the competitive aspect of the game. "Since we celebrated that last championship, Aaron hasn’t had this edge," Snead observed. "I don’t think Aaron’s ever really thought, ‘Okay, I wish I was playing football.’ But I think everything that we’ve done, kind of where we’re at, it’s the first time he’s thinking about it in a very serious manner."
The Rams organization is reportedly giving Donald space to make his decision, avoiding the imposition of artificial deadlines. This approach allows the future Hall of Famer to assess whether he can commit to the physical demands required to perform at his previous elite level.
While no official announcement has been made, and the physical toll of a return remains a consideration, Snead’s comments suggest the possibility of Donald rejoining the Rams is being taken seriously. Snead confirmed that Donald is engaged in a thorough decision-making process. "But I know he’s thinking about it in a serious manner," Snead said. "He’s going through his process to make sure if he does say yes, or if he does say no, there’s a rhyme and reason to that."
