Aaron Boone to Return as Yankees Manager for 10th Season
Despite fan frustration and another postseason exit, reports indicate the Yankees will stick with Boone for the upcoming season.
The New York Yankees are set to bring back manager Aaron Boone for his 10th season, according to reports. This decision comes despite widespread fan discontent, including "Fire Boone" chants heard at Yankee Stadium following the team's latest American League Division Series (ALDS) sweep.
Boone's contract extends through the 2027 season. His tenure has been marked by consistent regular-season success, with the team finishing above .500 in each of his nine campaigns and making the postseason in eight of those years. However, the ultimate goal of a World Series championship has remained elusive.
The Yankees' 2026 season mirrored the previous year, ending with a 93-68 record and an ALDS sweep by the eventual pennant-winning Tampa Bay Rays. In 2025, the team posted a 94-68 record before falling in the ALDS to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Fan criticism has often focused on Boone's perceived lack of strictness with players, which some believe contributes to inconsistent performance and mental errors during crucial parts of the season. Under his management, the Yankees have won the division three times and reached the pennant once, but have notably struggled in postseason series against teams with superior regular-season records.
Owner Hal Steinbrenner was reportedly aware of the fan sentiment against Boone. Boone was hired in 2017, replacing Joe Girardi, and received extensions throughout his tenure. His current deal was extended after the 2024 season, in which the Yankees lost the World Series.
The Mariners and Astros are currently the only MLB teams seeking new managers, having parted ways with their previous skippers. Several other teams, including the Mets, Red Sox, and Phillies, have recently retained their interim managers on a full-time basis.
