49ers-Seahawks Game Ends in Controversy Over Crucial Fourth-Down Call

A controversial call in the closing seconds of the Week 5 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks left NFL fans divided and contributed to the Seahawks' 32-29 defeat.

With 54 seconds remaining and facing fourth-and-10, Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp appeared to make a crucial reception near the first-down marker. He extended his body forward in an attempt to reach the line as he went out of bounds at the 40-yard line. However, the officials on the field ruled that Kupp was short of the first down, and a subsequent review upheld the decision, determining he had stepped out of bounds before reaching the marker.

The ruling effectively ended Seattle's opportunity to tie or take the lead, with many fans expressing their frustration on social media. "That s*** is rigged man LMFAOOOOOO," one user posted on X, while another commented, "I just spent three hours watching great football for the game to be decided by refs man." A third fan stated, "i'm genuinely confused how that is not a 1st down," and another declared, "The Seahawks got ROBBED."

Conversely, some viewers agreed with the officials' decision. "Nah, he short. He stretched after he was out of bounds," one commenter argued. Another user suggested, "There is a chip in the ball dude. They know where it went out," while a third insisted, "I thought it was a good call."

Officials ruled that the wideout was just short, ending the Seahawks' hopes of a comeback

The loss drops the Seahawks to a 3-2 record, while the victory improves the 49ers to 5-0. This win offers some measure of retribution for San Francisco after suffering two late-season losses to Seattle last year, including a significant defeat in the playoffs.

The game was marked by a high number of turnovers, with a season-high seven combined. San Francisco linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected during the contest. Prior to the Niners taking a late lead, no team had managed a touchdown drive exceeding 25 yards.

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy led a crucial drive late in the third quarter, which included a 28-yard pass to Mike Evans after an intentional grounding penalty put the team in a difficult second-and-21 situation. This set up Purdy's seven-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks, giving the 49ers a 29-26 advantage after a two-point conversion.

Sam Darnold orchestrated a drive for the Seahawks that resulted in a game-tying field goal. However, Purdy and the 49ers responded by moving the ball 43 yards to set up kicker Jake Pineiro's go-ahead field goal. The Seahawks' final possession saw Jaxon Smith-Njigba drop a third-down pass near midfield before the controversial call on Kupp's reception.
