San Francisco 49ers rookie defensive end Romello Height was carted off the field during Monday's practice, raising immediate injury concerns. Medical staff were observed examining Height's right leg and arms before he was taken off the field. The practice was concluded early following the incident.
Later, the team announced that Height was experiencing cramps, mitigating some of the initial worries about a more serious injury. However, the incident occurred just one day after another setback for the 49ers' receiving corps.
Receiver Christian Kirk suffered a calf strain during his first training camp practice with the team on Sunday and was seen leaving with a trainer. Kirk did not participate in Monday's practice session. He joined the 49ers after recording 28 receptions for 239 yards and one touchdown in 13 regular-season games for Houston last year, and added 10 catches for 164 yards and two scores in the playoffs.
Kirk was expected to be an important part of the 49ers' passing game. With Brandon Aiyuk's future uncertain and Deebo Samuel unlikely to return, the team signed veteran Mike Evans and Kirk to bolster their wide receiving options. They are slated to join promising young receiver Ricky Pearsall in providing targets for quarterback Brock Purdy.
Kirk was not the only player to sustain an injury during Sunday's practice. Vederian Lowe sustained a high-ankle sprain, while Gracen Halton and Andrew Farmer II were also sidelined on Monday.
