The San Francisco 49ers began their season with a resounding 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, marking the NFL's historic debut in Australia before a crowd of 100,000 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Quarterback Brock Purdy orchestrated the 49ers' offense, completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. This performance helped to silence any lingering questions surrounding the franchise following a tumultuous offseason, which included owner Jed York's arrest.

In contrast, the Rams' offense struggled under the pressure applied by the 49ers' defense. Matthew Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards and threw one interception. The Rams were unable to score in the second half.

San Francisco's scoring was spread across multiple players. Purdy connected with Demarcus Robinson, Mike Evans, and Deebo Samuel for touchdowns. Running back Christian McCaffrey contributed 68 rushing yards on 10 carries, and rookie Kaelon Black added 65 rushing yards.

The Rams' sole touchdown came in the second quarter by way of a short run from Kyren Williams, which briefly gave them a 7-3 lead. However, San Francisco responded with 24 unanswered points.

Defensively, linebacker Fred Warner led the 49ers with 11 tackles, disrupting the Rams' offensive drives. Kicker Eddy Pineiro extended the lead in the fourth quarter with a 56-yard field goal.

The victory was dampened by an injury to rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling, who suffered a calf injury in his NFL debut without contact from an opponent. He was ruled out at halftime and will undergo further testing.

The 49ers' offseason was marked by several incidents, including head coach Kyle Shanahan's involvement in a car crash in July and owner Jed York's arrest. The team also faced a lengthy flight to Australia for their season opener. Adding to their challenges, defensive tackle Alfred Collins sustained a season-ending knee injury earlier in the week during practice, tearing his patellar tendon. Collins was slated to be the starting nose tackle in his second season, testing the depth of the defensive line.

"That was a big loss," Shanahan said. "We've lost two D-linemen pretty much for the year after (final roster) cuts, before the first game, which is going to be a huge challenge. I'm hurting for Alfred. It's real unfortunate for him."
