San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained multiple injuries, including a concussion, fractured ribs, a broken nose and hand, and a facial laceration requiring 40 stitches, in a car crash on July 14. The severity of the incident is detailed in newly released dispatch audio obtained by The California Post. Authorities were alerted to the accident shortly after 6:13 p.m. near Shanahan's home in Palo Alto, California.
Initial reports from the scene described a collision involving a black Tesla and a blue Mercedes, with one driver reported to be bleeding from the head. Law enforcement later confirmed Shanahan was one of the two drivers involved and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. According to a statement from Palo Alto Police Department spokesperson Lt. Nicolas Martinez, impairment was not suspected, and both drivers were cooperative. No citations were issued, and the cause or fault of the collision will not be released.
Despite his injuries, Shanahan is expected to recover, but will be unable to fully coach the team during training camp. General Manager John Lynch informed reporters that assistant head coach Chris Foerster will serve as interim head coach. Lynch emphasized that coaching duties will be a collective effort while Shanahan is sidelined for recovery, with his return dictated by medical professionals.
The 49ers are scheduled to begin their season on September 11 against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
