San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained significant injuries, including a severe concussion, a broken nose, three fractured ribs, and a broken hand, following a car crash near his Northern California residence on July 14. The collision involved an SUV, and Shanahan required approximately 40 stitches for facial injuries, according to ESPN.
Shanahan was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was released later the same day. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was not injured. Authorities have stated that neither drugs nor alcohol were contributing factors in the incident.
As the team prepares to open training camp on Sunday, Shanahan is expected to participate in team activities on a limited basis during his recovery. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers," the 49ers organization said in a statement. The team also expressed gratitude to the first responders for their assistance.
Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster and other 49ers coordinators will assume head coaching duties during Shanahan's initial recovery period.
