Stunning photographs taken in the Arctic and Antarctic by British expeditioners Sue Flood and Ian Dawson are featured in their new book, "Midnight Sun." The collection aims to raise awareness for the planet's polar environments, which the photographers describe as "in need of protection."
The book, a 208-page compilation of 132 captioned images, offers an "equal focus" on both the Arctic and Antarctic. It documents the daily lives of iconic species such as polar bears and Adélie penguins, alongside dramatic portrayals of the regions' landscapes.
Images include Adélie penguins, the smallest penguin species on the Antarctic continent, gathered together in 2020 and navigating icy terrain on Siple Island in 2022. Emperor penguins are depicted huddled against blizzards at Snow Hill Island rookery in October 2008.
Wildlife captured in the Arctic includes polar bears. One image shows a Beaufort Sea bear crossing ice floes in Alaska in August 2024. Another photograph captures a polar bear leaping in the Arctic Ocean in August 2023.
A polar bear is seen drying off on sea ice in the Arctic Ocean in 2022, while two other polar bears navigate icy terrain.
Antarctic waters are represented by an orca gliding through calm seas in McMurdo Sound in 2024.
The book is described as a "treasured record before these landscapes change forever," highlighting the photographers' concern for the future of these environments.
