NASA Photo Sparks Speculation of Ancient Martian Civilization

A recent image captured by NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars has ignited speculation among some observers about the existence of a lost civilization on the Red Planet. UFO researcher Scott C. Waring shared a photograph from the mission, which shows a rocky Martian landscape. In the distance, Waring identified a formation he claims is an ancient gateway.

Waring highlighted a feature resembling a tall, narrow doorway within a jagged rock face, noting its dark interior and tapered top. He wrote on his website, UFO Sightings Daily, that he found "ancient runes" and another formation supporting his theory of a lost civilization. He described this second formation as a "tiny doorway" measuring approximately seven inches high and five inches wide, entering a pyramid-shaped object.

The image in question was taken by the Perseverance rover's Mastcam-Z cameras in June 2021, during its 107th Martian day (Sol 107), within Jezero Crater. This location is of significant interest to scientists because it once held a lake billions of years ago, making it a prime area to search for signs of ancient microbial life. NASA has consistently stated that there is no evidence of extraterrestrial life.

This is not the first time NASA images have prompted such theories. In August, a photograph taken by the Curiosity rover in May 2022 appeared to show a dark, rectangular opening in a rocky hill. Waring and other observers suggested this could be a doorway to a primitive dwelling.

Waring estimated this opening to be approximately 6.6 feet tall and 3.3 feet wide. However, the actual dimensions cannot be definitively determined from the panorama alone without knowing its distance from the rover or having a reference object for scale. The feature could be significantly smaller or larger than estimated.

NASA addressed similar speculation in May 2022 regarding another door-shaped feature photographed by Curiosity. Initially believed to be large enough for a person to pass through, fueling theories of an artificial structure on Mount Sharp, closer analysis revealed it measured only about 12 inches tall and 16 inches wide – comparable to the size of a dog door.

At the time, NASA explained that such openings are common in bedrock on both Earth and Mars and are often created by naturally occurring fractures. Scientists determined that the earlier "doorway" was a result of intersecting fractures causing pieces of rock to break away.
