A pod of approximately eight dolphins, including calves, was recently spotted playing off the coast of Sunderland near Tyne and Wear. The dolphins were observed swimming near Roker Pier on Monday.

Anthony Skordis, a local resident, reported seeing the playful group. "I heard some dolphins had been at Roker in the morning so thought I would chance a walk up the pier later morning and I was lucky that a group of about eight dolphins were still there," Skordis said. "They were in a really playful mood."

Bottlenose dolphins are frequently sighted in the area, particularly during the summer months. Pods in the region can range from ten to 40 individuals and are commonly seen at locations such as Tynemouth's Longsands beach, King Edward's bay, the Tyne Estuary, and Roker Pier.
