Amateur astronomers gain permission for mini-observatory at village hall

The Shropshire Astronomical Society (SAS) has been granted permission to set up a mini-observatory at Rodington Village Hall near Shrewsbury. The society plans to relocate a disused dome and telescope that was once utilized by the Irish Rangers at the Tern Hill army base. The SAS has been based at the village hall for 25 years and believes the new facility will increase public interest in astronomy.

Telford and Wrekin planners described the proposed curved gloss white fibreglass dome as "somewhat unusual" but stated it would add "some visual interest to the site." According to the society's application, the observatory will be the first public astronomical observatory in the area, aiming to inspire residents and the wider community.

Philip Osman, chairman of the SAS, explained that a permanent observatory would foster greater participation and enable the group to organize community outreach activities. He added that the dome would be the only publicly accessible observatory in the county, providing an opportunity to expand outreach efforts and engage with a new generation. The society reached an agreement to purchase the mini-observatory in May.

The domed structure is expected to be approximately 2.7 meters (8 feet 9 inches) tall. Council officials determined that the proposal would not lead to unacceptable noise, disturbance, or other disruptions for nearby residents. They also concluded that it was unlikely to cause a significant increase in traffic or parking demand. Planners agreed that the facility would serve as a valuable community and educational resource.
