Younger Adults Facing Surge in Parkinson's Cases, Highlighting Often-Ignored Symptoms

Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder, is increasingly affecting individuals diagnosed before the age of 50, a trend that concerns medical professionals and advocates. Early symptoms, often dismissed as minor inconveniences or clumsiness, can include subtle changes in grip strength, movement, and motor control.

Emma Karembo Cornthwaite, diagnosed with Parkinson's at 37, initially attributed her dropped possessions and occasional tremors to simple accidents. "I thought I was just clumsy," she recalled. These early experiences, such as her grip slipping while carrying jerrycans on a camping trip, went unnoticed as significant symptoms for over two years until her condition worsened and a diagnosis was finally made.

Parkinson's disease affects the central nervous system and is characterized by symptoms such as uncontrollable tremors, slow movement, muscle stiffness, and impaired balance. While typically diagnosed in older adults, the rise in early-onset cases underscores the need for younger individuals experiencing unexplained physical changes to seek medical evaluation.

Outdoorsy and adventurous, Emma Karembo Cornthwaite was used to long hikes and camping trips. So she was shocked when her grip suddenly slipped on the jerrycan she was carrying.

Cornthwaite is now raising awareness and funds for Parkinson's research and support by undertaking a cycling journey from Lincolnshire to the south of France. Her efforts highlight the challenges faced by those diagnosed with the condition at a younger age and the importance of early detection and intervention.
