Monica Ren was 18 when she first noticed swelling in her left foot and ankle. Doctors eventually diagnosed her with primary lymphedema, a chronic condition where fluid builds up in the body's tissues due to a poorly developed lymphatic system. Despite being told there was little she could do to reverse the condition, Ren, now 28, has managed to significantly reduce her symptoms through substantial lifestyle changes.

Lymphedema typically occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged by cancer treatment, infection, or injury. In Ren's case, the rarer primary form is believed to be genetic, although she has no known family history of the disease. The condition can cause persistent, sometimes painful swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs, and can worsen over time if not managed, potentially leading to hardened tissues and increased susceptibility to infections.

Initially, Ren was advised to wear a compression stocking and was presented with the possibility of surgical procedures to improve lymphatic drainage or remove excess tissue. However, she felt her concerns about diet were dismissed with a general recommendation to "eat healthy." The compression stocking offered little relief, and she found herself increasingly tired and self-conscious, impacting her social life and college experience.

Frustrated by the lack of improvement from standard treatments like compression garments and weekly lymphatic drainage massages, Ren, at 19, decided to take control of her health by radically overhauling her diet. She eliminated meat and highly processed foods, opting instead for a whole-food, plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. She reported an almost immediate positive response, feeling her lymphatic system become more active within a week.

Dr. James Loomis, an internal medicine physician, noted that highly processed foods often contain high levels of sodium, refined carbohydrates, and excess calories, while being low in fiber. "Excess sodium can increase fluid retention, which may make swelling more noticeable in someone whose lymphatic drainage is already impaired," he explained.

Later, Ren adopted a raw vegan diet for a period, consuming only uncooked, unprocessed plant foods. Over several months, the swelling in her leg virtually disappeared, and she lost 20 pounds. This dramatic change solidified her belief in the effectiveness of her new eating habits. While experts acknowledge there's no specific diet to cure lymphedema, research suggests that weight loss can play a crucial role in managing symptoms. Studies indicate that losing weight can reduce the burden on a compromised lymphatic system, leading to a reduction in limb swelling, particularly in individuals who are overweight.

As her swelling decreased and her energy levels improved, Ren also incorporated regular physical activity into her routine, including walking and cycling. Exercise, such as walking, cycling, and resistance training, has been shown to help individuals with lymphedema manage their symptoms. Dr. Edmundo Rodriguez-Frias stated that muscle contractions from movement, like walking and exercises, act as a mechanical pump to help propel lymph fluid. "The principle is progressive loading rather than avoiding exercise," advised Dr. Loomis.

Ren also focused on getting adequate sleep and continued to maintain a strict diet, including daily celery juice and fruit smoothies, and meals of salads or zucchini noodles. She also experimented with electrolyzed reduced water, though experts like plastic surgeon Dr. James J. Chao caution that scientific evidence for its benefits in treating lymphedema is mixed and largely based on animal studies.

Now, a decade after her diagnosis, Ren has moved away from the extreme raw vegan diet. She now incorporates foods like eggs, cottage cheese, and fish into her diet, alongside fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains, while still limiting highly processed foods. She continues to engage in walking and resistance training, and reports that her lymphedema remains well-controlled. Ren now shares her experiences on TikTok, emphasizing the importance of cutting out processed foods for managing the condition, though she acknowledges that individual needs vary.
