Abigail Bush, 54, has shared her experience of losing 10.5 stone, more than half her body weight, by adhering to The Cambridge 1:1 Diet. Her journey, which began as a way to feel more comfortable for an upcoming holiday, led to significant health improvements, including the early detection of melanoma.

Bush, who stands at 5ft 4in, weighed 21 stone and wore a size 30-32 in May 2024. She recounted struggles with weight throughout her life, which were exacerbated by personal difficulties, including fleeing a violent marriage, the death of her son's father by suicide, and her older son's autism diagnosis. During this period, food became an escape, leading to significant weight gain.

The Cambridge 1:1 Diet

Initially, Bush's friend, a consultant for The Cambridge 1:1 Diet, suggested the plan. Bush started with Step 1B, consuming four meal replacement products daily, totaling approximately 800 calories. The diet offers over 40 types of meal replacements, including cereals, yogurts, soups, main meals like spaghetti bolognese and Thai noodles, and snacks such as crisps and smoothies.

Within four weeks, leading up to her holiday in Majorca, Bush lost a stone. Feeling positive about the results, she decided to continue. By November of the same year, she had lost half her body weight, reaching 10.5 stone and a size 12-14. She attributes her current health and comfort in her own skin to this weight loss.

Health Benefits and Cancer Detection

Bush noted that her significant weight loss played a crucial role in her health, directly leading to the discovery of a melanoma. Previously, her excess weight obscured a mole on her forearm, which she avoided looking at closely. After losing weight, she noticed the mole had scabbed and sought medical attention. A doctor confirmed it was a melanoma, which was subsequently removed. Bush expressed gratitude for catching the cancer at an early stage.

Lifestyle Changes and Maintenance

Bush implemented several strategies to achieve and maintain her weight loss. She set short-term goals, such as reaching her birthday or Christmas milestones, which she found less overwhelming than long-term targets. Recognizing her past relationship with food, she found the structure of meal replacements helpful in managing her eating habits.

To maintain her progress, Bush now follows the diet on weekdays, consuming meal replacement products. On weekends, she allows herself to eat more freely, incorporating foods like fruit, yogurt, tuna salad, and jacket potatoes. She has also become more active, aiming for at least 6,000 steps daily, going on walks and bike rides with her children, and joining a local netball team. She emphasizes the importance of thinking like a slim person and quickly returning to healthy habits if she gains a few pounds, for instance, after holidays.

Support from her consultant friend and a WhatsApp group of fellow slimmers provided her with encouragement throughout her journey.
