Weight-Loss Drugs Offer Health Benefits Beyond Pounds Lost, Research Shows

GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, are demonstrating a range of health benefits that extend beyond their primary effect of promoting weight loss, according to emerging research.

These drugs may offer protection for the heart, potentially alleviate joint pain and inflammation, and support kidney health through mechanisms independent of shedding pounds.

Cardiovascular Protection

Research indicates that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, can provide cardiovascular advantages. A significant study published in The Lancet revealed that semaglutide reduced the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death in individuals with existing cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity. These benefits were observed across various body weights and were not solely attributable to weight reduction.

Joint Health and Mobility

GLP-1 medications have been associated with reduced joint pain. The STEP 9 clinical trial, detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that semaglutide significantly decreased knee osteoarthritis pain and enhanced physical function in adults with obesity. The exact contribution of weight loss versus other drug effects on these improvements is still under investigation. Young woman runner grips her knee with both hands after an outdoor run.

Kidney and Liver Health

GLP-1 medications may aid in protecting kidney function through improved blood sugar, blood pressure, and reduced inflammation. The FLOW trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that semaglutide lowered the risk of major kidney complications and cardiovascular death by 24% in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Furthermore, these drugs are being studied for their potential to improve liver health, particularly in cases of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that semaglutide led to improvements in liver tissue, with a higher percentage of patients experiencing MASH resolution without worsening fibrosis compared to a placebo group. Respiratory and Mental Health

Real-world data presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress suggests a link between GLP-1 medications and fewer asthma attacks and COPD flare-ups, possibly due to anti-inflammatory effects. Research is also exploring potential benefits for mental health and addiction, with early studies suggesting lower rates of substance-related and mood disorders among users. However, these findings require further peer-reviewed investigation. Young woman injects GLP-1 medication into her abdomen while sitting at home.

Skin Conditions

GLP-1-based drugs are also being examined for their impact on inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis. A clinical trial in JAMA Dermatology indicated that adding tirzepatide to existing psoriasis treatment improved skin clearance in adults with moderate to severe psoriasis and overweight or obesity.

Researchers continue to investigate the precise mechanisms behind these varied benefits, which may involve a combination of weight loss, reduced inflammation, or other factors. Patients are advised to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss the potential risks and benefits specific to their health needs.
