Vitamin D May Boost Cognition in Seniors, But Dosage Is Key, Study Finds

A new study suggests that a common supplement, Vitamin D, may enhance cognitive function in older adults experiencing memory issues, with higher doses showing a more significant association with cognitive benefits. The research, conducted by scientists at Emory University School of Medicine and Public Health, focused on participants diagnosed with or suspected of having mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and disturbed sleep patterns.

According to the study, individuals taking 5,000 IU or more of Vitamin D daily demonstrated a marginally significant association with higher scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) compared to those not taking the supplement. The researchers concluded that higher daily doses of Vitamin D are linked to better overall cognitive performance within this specific demographic.

Vitamin D supplements are readily available, with many options suitable for daily intake. One brand highlighted offers a 5,000 IU dose of Vitamin D3 combined with Vitamin K to aid absorption. Another formulation from the same brand provides a 10,000 IU dose for those seeking an even higher potency.

Some users of these higher-dose supplements have reported positive effects. One individual in their 80s noted an improvement in energy levels and mood after using a 5,000 IU supplement for just over a week. Another reviewer taking the 10,000 IU formula claimed benefits in focus, memory, and a reduction in leg cramps.

The formulations often include bioavailable forms of vitamins D3 and K2, with some designed for enhanced absorption and to support bone and immune health. These products are typically third-party tested for purity and potency, and are often free from gluten and GMOs.

As with any dietary supplement, individuals are advised to consult with their physician before starting Vitamin D supplementation, particularly if they have pre-existing health conditions.
