New research suggests that excess visceral fat, even in individuals who are not overweight, can significantly increase heart disease risk, highlighting the importance of waist circumference as a health indicator.

Being overweight is often presented as a primary health concern, but a growing body of research indicates that the distribution of body fat may be a more critical factor in cardiovascular health. Individuals who maintain a slim overall physique but carry excess fat around their waist may face a considerably higher risk of heart disease, according to recent findings.
This type of fat, known as visceral fat, accumulates deep within the abdominal cavity, surrounding vital organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. Its presence is linked to metabolic dysfunction and inflammation, contributing to a range of health issues, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Professor Naveed Sattar, a leading researcher in the field, emphasizes that a larger waistline is a key indicator of accumulating visceral fat. This fat poses a significant health threat because of its direct proximity to the organs and its active role in producing hormones and inflammatory substances that can disrupt normal bodily functions.
While the exact mechanisms are still being explored, the correlation between increased visceral fat and elevated heart disease risk is becoming increasingly clear. Studies suggest that individuals with a higher waist circumference, even if their body mass index (BMI) falls within the normal range, can experience a risk of heart disease up to 50 percent higher than their counterparts with a slimmer waist.
This understanding shifts the focus from solely managing overall body weight to paying closer attention to body composition and fat distribution. Strategies aimed at reducing visceral fat often include dietary modifications, such as limiting processed foods and sugary drinks, and regular physical activity. Exercise that combines cardiovascular training with strength training is frequently recommended for its effectiveness in reducing body fat, including visceral fat.
