UK Approves Life-Extending Breast Cancer Drug for NHS Patients
Enhertu offers new hope for individuals with HER2-low metastatic breast cancer, providing additional months of life on average.
Patients in England diagnosed with a specific form of incurable breast cancer can now access Enhertu, a drug proven to extend life, through the National Health Service (NHS). The medication has been shown to provide patients with an average of nearly seven additional months of life.
While women in Scotland have had access to Enhertu on the NHS since 2023, and it is already available in 26 other European countries, its approval in England marks a significant step forward for many patients.
Doctors in England are now authorized to prescribe the drug, with Wales expected to follow suit shortly. Guidance for Northern Ireland has not yet been automatically applied.
Kate Wills, a 51-year-old patient with HER2-low metastatic breast cancer that has spread to her bones and lungs, expressed profound relief and joy upon hearing the news. "I really can't believe it. I'm so relieved, I'm overjoyed," Wills stated. "It's so hard keeping hope when you have stage four cancer. This gives me enormous hope."
