A natural supplement derived from bitter hops extract may significantly enhance fat loss while preventing the loss of lean muscle mass, according to a recent study. The supplement, costing approximately $3 per day, demonstrated the ability to help participants lose six-and-a-half times more fat compared to a placebo.
The research, published in the journal Obesity Pillars and funded by the supplement company Calocurb, involved 128 adults participating in a 24-week weight-loss program. Alongside monthly lifestyle coaching sessions focused on diet and exercise, participants took a daily supplement containing either 500 mg of bitter hops extract or a placebo, divided between their two largest meals.
Participants taking the bitter hops extract lost an average of 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg) of body fat over the study period, which was approximately 8.6 pounds (3.9 kg) more than those in the placebo group. Notably, the study found no significant loss of lean muscle mass among those taking the hops extract.
Experts suggest that the bitter compounds in hops activate satiety hormones, promoting a feeling of fullness. Dr. Madusha Peiris, a neurogastroenterologist at Queen Mary University of London, explained that these compounds stimulate specialized sensors in the gut, triggering the release of hormones that signal fullness to the brain. This mechanism is similar to that targeted by GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, which are currently used by an estimated 29 million Americans.
However, the study also noted that about 10% of participants experienced side effects, including diarrhea and nausea. Researchers and experts caution that while promising, the supplement's effectiveness and safety profile may not yet be comparable to GLP-1 medications, particularly for individuals with obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes.
Previous research has indicated that bitter hops extract can reduce cravings and calorie intake, but this study provides evidence that these effects can translate into meaningful fat loss. The researchers concluded that the supplement could offer an additional option for individuals struggling with weight loss or seeking to prevent weight regain after using GLP-1 drugs.
Experts also highlight that naturally stimulating appetite-control systems through diet, such as by consuming a high-fiber diet rich in nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, oats, and vegetables, can have similar effects by stimulating the same gut receptors.
Amarasate is identified as the active ingredient in the food supplement Calocurb.
