Mother Considers Egg Freezing for Daughter Diagnosed with Early Puberty
A 5-year-old girl who started puberty at 10 months old may have her eggs frozen to preserve future fertility.
A mother is exploring the possibility of freezing her 5-year-old daughter’s eggs due to a rare condition that caused her to begin puberty at just 10 months old. Sienna’s mother, Sophie Dumas, became aware of an issue when a health visitor noticed enlargement in the baby’s breast tissue.
Following medical evaluation, Sienna was diagnosed with central precocious puberty (CPP), a condition where the brain signals the body to begin puberty much earlier than usual. The diagnostic process involved several distressing tests, including stim tests to measure hormone levels and X-rays to assess bone age. Sienna also underwent an MRI to rule out any underlying brain abnormalities, which fortunately came back clear.
Without treatment, Sienna would have experienced puberty years ahead of her peers. Doctors explained that early puberty can affect final adult height due to accelerated growth plate maturation. Beyond the physical implications, Dumas expressed concern about the emotional toll on Sienna, noting that early physical differences can lead to bullying, isolation, and mental health challenges.
Sienna now receives monthly injections of a GnRH analogue hormone blocker to suppress the hormones responsible for puberty. This treatment is expected to continue until she is around 11 or 12 years old, depending on her development and bone age. Dumas described the injections as heartbreaking, especially when Sienna cries out in distress, but acknowledged their necessity for her daughter's well-being.
Complications from the condition have begun to surface, including facial spots that have led to teasing at school, with other children mistaking them for chickenpox. Dumas has informed Sienna’s teacher about the situation. She is also concerned about the potential impact on Sienna’s fertility later in life and is investigating egg freezing as an option to preserve her daughter's reproductive choices.
Dumas emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice for any parental concerns, recalling that an initial assessment by a health visitor was crucial in Sienna receiving timely treatment. She hopes to shield Sienna from the pressures of puberty for as long as possible, aiming to preserve her childhood innocence and plans to take her to Disneyland to foster this.
