Microscopic Mites Infest Eyelashes, Causing Itching and Swelling
A woman's persistent eye discomfort was traced to an infestation of demodex mites, commonly found on human skin.
An increasing number of people are suffering from persistent eye irritation, itching, and swelling due to microscopic mites living in their eyelashes. Charmian Edgerton experienced years of discomfort before discovering that her eyes were infested with demodex mites, a common type of mite that lives on human skin.
The condition, often referred to as ocular demodicosis, can lead to a range of symptoms including redness, itching, foreign body sensation, and even vision disturbances. These mites, too small to be seen with the naked eye, feed on oils and dead skin cells found on the face and in hair follicles. The eyelids, with their abundant oil glands and hair follicles, provide a particularly hospitable environment for these parasites.
Demodex mites are a natural part of the human microbiome, with a significant percentage of the population harboring them without experiencing any adverse effects. However, in some individuals, an overpopulation can lead to significant discomfort and a variety of ocular symptoms. The irritation can be caused by the mites themselves, their eggs, or their waste products accumulating on the lash line.
Diagnosis typically involves a microscopic examination of eyelash samples, which can reveal the presence of mites, eggs, or fecal matter. Treatment often involves a combination of lid scrubs, topical medications, and sometimes oral medications to reduce the mite population and alleviate symptoms. Maintaining good eyelid hygiene is crucial for managing and preventing future infestations. These microscopic parasites can cause significant distress and require professional medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment.
