Man Credits Bodybuilding for Anorexia Recovery
Jordan Caldwell found a new purpose and a path to recovery through a passion for bodybuilding after struggling with an eating disorder for nearly two decades.
Jordan Caldwell, a youth football coach, recently celebrated his 30th birthday by achieving a long-held dream: a bodybuilding-themed photoshoot. This milestone marked a significant turning point after a lifelong battle with anorexia, an eating disorder he has faced since age 12. For years, his parents feared he might not reach this age.
Caldwell found a crucial turning point four years ago when he connected with online fitness coach Aamir Ishtiaque. This connection provided him with a tangible goal and a renewed sense of purpose, which he describes as the moment “everything changed for the better.” By sharing his recovery journey, Caldwell hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles, demonstrating that strength and passion can be found even amidst profound challenges.
His love for sports, particularly football and bodybuilding, has been a constant throughout his life. He viewed bodybuilders as aspirational figures, akin to superheroes. The bodybuilding photoshoot, which included a spray tan and posing, was an experience he described as "pretty cool" and potentially the second-best day of his life, surpassed only by playing high-level youth football before his eating disorder took hold.
Ishtiaque, Caldwell's coach, noted that working with Jordan has profoundly impacted his coaching approach. He emphasized the importance of building trust, especially given Caldwell's past difficulty in accepting advice. "If I can gain his trust, do small things initially, then that leads onto bigger things," Ishtiaque explained.
With the photoshoot goal accomplished, Ishtiaque is focused on maintaining momentum for Caldwell, recognizing that recovery is not always a linear process. Their professional relationship has evolved into a deep bond, with Ishtiaque considering Caldwell akin to family. He stated that while he has transformed many clients, his work with Caldwell stands out due to the depth of their relationship, which extends far beyond a typical coach-client dynamic.
Reflecting on the experience, Caldwell expressed that the photoshoot allowed him to see himself in a new light. "For me to now look back and think 'that was me', it shows you there is hope," he said. The journey has provided him with a powerful testament to the possibility of recovery and finding resilience through pursuing one's passions.
