Sandra Champkins, a resident of Banbury in Oxfordshire, was diagnosed with lung cancer after participating in the Thames Valley Lung Cancer Screening Programme in 2025. Champkins, who had not smoked for a decade and was experiencing no symptoms, was invited for a check-up as part of the initiative. A CT scan conducted in a mobile unit located in a supermarket car park at Banbury's Tesco revealed the presence of cancer. The early detection is credited with saving her life.

The Thames Valley Lung Cancer Screening Programme aims to identify the disease in its early stages, potentially offering better treatment outcomes for patients. Mobile screening units allow for wider accessibility, bringing diagnostic services closer to communities.
