Low-Carb Diet Shows Promise in Reversing Liver Damage, Study Suggests

A recent study published in the journal Cell Metabolism indicates that a popular low-carbohydrate diet can significantly reverse liver damage. Researchers divided 55 volunteers into three groups, each following a distinct popular diet plan. The findings suggest the low-carb approach yielded striking results.

While the study did not specify the exact composition of the low-carb diet, it implied that it may outperform both Mediterranean and plant-based eating patterns in addressing liver damage. The ketogenic diet, a very low-carbohydrate diet, has been shown to reduce dangerous fat in the liver, potentially without requiring the elimination of foods like bacon, sausages, eggs, and cheese.

However, experts caution that individuals following low-carbohydrate diets in real-world scenarios might inadvertently consume higher amounts of saturated fat. Professor Naveed Sattar has warned that this could lead to elevated levels of LDL, or 'bad,' cholesterol. The study's findings are part of ongoing research into dietary interventions for liver health.
