King's College Hospital in London has opened the United Kingdom's first intensive care ward situated on its rooftop. The innovative ward is designed to allow seriously ill patients to receive care outdoors, with the aim of monitoring and potentially boosting their recovery.

Hollie Allan, a 29-year-old patient, became the first to experience the new facility. After two months in intensive care, she was transferred to the rooftop ward. Upon exiting the lift, she was met with sunshine, a sensation she described as deeply moving. "I'm sorry, it's so nice. It's so beautiful," Allan said, tearing up. "I forgot what it feels like to be outside."

The ward can accommodate up to six patients. Each bed is equipped with a waterproof housing unit that provides essential power and oxygen supplies. The canopy design ensures that even patients requiring significant medical support can be safely cared for in the outdoor environment.

This initiative represents a novel approach to critical care, integrating the therapeutic benefits of fresh air and natural light into the treatment of severely ill patients. The hospital will be monitoring the impact of this outdoor setting on patient outcomes and recovery rates.
