Kelly Ripa has shared that her diligent tooth-brushing habits, which she considered a "good habit," ultimately led to gum recession and the need for a "painful" gum graft surgery. Ripa, 55, explained on her podcast, "Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa," that she had caused significant gum recession by brushing her teeth too frequently and perhaps too vigorously.
The common practice of over-brushing, characterized by scrubbing for extended periods or with excessive force, can result in gum recession. This condition occurs when the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, exposing the tooth roots and increasing sensitivity and vulnerability to infection. It is a form of gum disease that cannot naturally reverse itself.
To address the recession, Ripa underwent a gum graft procedure where tissue was taken from the roof of her mouth to reconstruct the lost gumline. Her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, noted the significant discomfort she experienced, stating that Ripa, who typically has a high pain tolerance, found this surgery particularly difficult. She was also unable to speak for ten days following the procedure.
While brushing too little can also lead to gum issues, aggressive brushing can have detrimental effects on both gums and tooth enamel. Over-brushing can wear down enamel, potentially making teeth appear more brown and causing structural weakness near the gumline. Dentists generally recommend brushing for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Some dentists suggest electric toothbrushes with soft bristles and timers as a way to ensure adequate cleaning duration without excessive force.
Beyond localized oral health concerns, compromised gum health can have systemic effects. Bacteria entering the bloodstream through weakened gums have been linked to increased risks of heart attacks and stroke. It can also exacerbate conditions like diabetes due to chronic inflammation and potentially affect brain health, increasing the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer's.
