Anna Papalia, a social media influencer with over five million followers, has shared her experience with skin cancer, which resulted in 60 stitches across her face. The diagnosis of basal-cell carcinoma came two decades after her frequent use of sunbeds and inconsistent sun protection during her teenage years.

Papalia, 48, first noticed a spot on her nose five years ago. Initially, a dermatologist dismissed it as a minor cyst. However, two years later, the spot had become a persistent irritation, occasionally bleeding. A different dermatologist recommended a biopsy, leading to the diagnosis of basal-cell carcinoma.

The treatment involved Mohs micrographic surgery, a procedure to remove the cancerous tissue. The resulting wound required significant reconstruction, necessitating long incisions down to her chin and across her cheek to close the skin. Following the surgery, Papalia woke up with 60 stitches, a stark contrast to the small spot she had initially. She described the experience as traumatizing, initially fearing she would resemble the character Frankenstein.

"When you're in your teens and 20s you feel bulletproof, you get cocky – ‘it won't happen to me’," Papalia stated, reflecting on her past habits. She admitted to not wearing sunscreen and frequently using sunbeds, leading to frequent sunburns during her youth.

After undergoing various scar treatments, including silicone and laser therapy, Papalia's scar has become nearly invisible. She is now dedicated to raising awareness about sun safety, advocating against sunbed use, and emphasizing the importance of getting suspicious spots checked by medical professionals. Papalia is a mother of two and frequently advises her children on sun protection measures.
