Experts Warn High-Protein Diets May Be Fueling Rise in Kidney Stones Among Fit Individuals

A growing trend of high-protein diets, often adopted by health-conscious individuals, may be contributing to an alarming rise in kidney stone cases, even among those considered fit and healthy. Experts are warning that excessive protein intake could be a significant factor in this surge.

Sarah Wolfensohn, a mother of two from Oxfordshire, experienced recurring kidney stone flare-ups for years, describing the pain as sometimes worse than childbirth. Over 34 years, she suffered 14 such episodes, highlighting the debilitating nature of the condition. The pain typically manifests in waves of throbbing or stabbing sensations radiating from the side or lower back into the abdomen and groin.

While kidney stones are often associated with dehydration or a diet high in oxalates and salt, recent observations suggest a correlation with increased protein consumption. This has become a concern as many people adopt high-protein diets, often featuring lean meats, fish, and supplements, in pursuit of fitness and weight management goals.

Most kidney stones smaller than 5mm can pass naturally through the urinary tract. However, stones measuring 7mm or larger often require medical intervention, as the ureter, the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder, is typically only about 3mm wide. Larger stones may necessitate surgical removal, often through a small incision in the back to access the kidney.

Nutritionists are advising individuals to be mindful of their protein intake and ensure adequate hydration, especially when following restrictive or specialized diets. Consulting with healthcare professionals is recommended to balance dietary goals with long-term health considerations and to prevent conditions like kidney stones.
