Varicose veins, a condition affecting approximately one in five British adults, can become more pronounced and uncomfortable during hot weather. Experts recommend several science-backed home remedies to manage symptoms such as swelling, pain, and heaviness in the legs.
Varicose veins are characterized by twisted, bulging veins beneath the skin, typically in the legs. They occur when the small valves within the blood vessels are damaged, leading to blood pooling and vein distension. While they can affect individuals of all ages, those in their forties and fifties, pregnant individuals, people carrying excess weight, or those who stand for extended periods are at higher risk. Consultant vascular surgeon Ed Sideso notes that increased blood flow to the extremities and elevated swelling are common in warmer temperatures.
Cold Water Therapy
Exposure to cold water can temporarily constrict blood vessels, a process known as vasoconstriction. This can reduce swelling, pain, and inflammation. Professor Mark Whiteley, a venous surgeon, suggests that sitting in a cold bath or a swimming pool for about 15 to 20 minutes can be beneficial. The hydrostatic pressure of the water can also help relieve pressure on the affected areas, acting similarly to graduated compression socks, which aid blood flow and reduce swelling.
Flavonoid Supplements
Flavonoids, natural plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables like blueberries and kale, can also be consumed in concentrated tablet form, often referred to as flavonoid pills or Micronized Purified Flavonoid Fraction (MPFF). Sideso indicates that these can help alleviate leg swelling and may reduce aching and discomfort. Research, including a 2019 paper in Advances in Therapy, suggests that MPFF can improve symptoms such as leg pain, heaviness, and cramps by enhancing blood flow and reducing inflammation. While more common in Europe, where they are sometimes prescribed as medication, these supplements are available for purchase online in the UK. Experts caution that while generally not harmful, their efficacy can vary, and they are not a long-term cure.
Regular Walking
Walking is highly recommended by experts for vein health. Sideso explains that walking activates the calf muscles, which function as a pump to help return blood flow to the heart. This calf muscle pump mechanism is crucial for individuals experiencing leg swelling or heaviness. Incorporating short walks, even just 20 to 30 minutes in the morning and evening, can support good venous health. Avoiding prolonged sedentary periods is also important, as sitting for long durations reduces calf muscle activity, hindering blood flow and potentially contributing to vein problems.
