As summer temperatures rise, health experts are advising individuals to reconsider their exercise routines, particularly during heatwaves. Physiologist Damian Bailey from the University of South Wales emphasized the need for caution, suggesting that even young and healthy individuals should modify their fitness activities when temperatures are extreme.
Bailey's insights were shared on BBC Sounds' "Inside Health" program, which also explored exercise during pregnancy and post-exercise recovery. The program featured Calli Hauger-Thackery, who gained attention for running the Boston Marathon at 22 weeks pregnant. Hauger-Thackery, alongside physiotherapist Ros Cooke, discussed the bodily changes that occur during pregnancy and the types of exercise considered safe.
Post-Exercise Recovery
The program also delved into the best methods for recovering after physical exertion. At the University of Westminster's lab, Dr. Lewis Mattin put electrolytes to the test to determine their effectiveness in recovery. Cooke also provided guidance on the benefits of active recovery versus complete rest.
