As temperatures rise, a doctor from Bristol Royal Hospital for Children has shared essential advice for safeguarding children during heatwaves. Extreme heat can pose significant health risks to young individuals, making preventative measures crucial.

The pediatrician emphasized the importance of hydration, recommending that children drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day. Parents should be vigilant for signs of dehydration, such as a dry mouth, reduced urination, and lethargy.

Additionally, keeping children cool is paramount. This can be achieved by seeking out cool environments, utilizing fans or air conditioning, and opting for lightweight, light-colored clothing. Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and ensuring children wear hats and sunscreen when exposed to the sun are also key recommendations.

The doctor also advised against leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for short periods, as car interiors can heat up to dangerous levels very quickly. He stressed that parents and caregivers should be aware of the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and know how to respond appropriately if they occur.
