Former Miami Marlins president and MLB analyst David Samson announced the death of his 28-year-old daughter, Kyra, on Wednesday. Samson shared the news in a social media post, detailing his daughter's passing after an 11-day battle with brain cancer, specifically glioblastoma.
"Yesterday, my daughter, Kyra, passed away peacefully after a 9 month and 11 day fight against one of the cruelest diseases I’ve ever seen up close," Samson wrote on X, formerly Twitter. He added that Kyra handled her illness with "courage, poise, and resolve." Samson expressed a desire for no other family to experience such loss.
Samson, who spent 18 seasons in Major League Baseball, including 16 as president of the Marlins, also indicated that those wishing to make memorial gifts can contribute to The Kyra Fund. This fund is dedicated to researching treatments for glioblastomas.
Samson concluded his tenure with the Marlins in 2017, after playing a role in the franchise's $1.2 billion sale to Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman. He is now a broadcaster, hosting his show 'Nothing Personal with David Samson,' and a regular on 'The Dan Le Batard Show.' He has also served as an MLB analyst for CBS Sports HQ and CBS Sports Network since 2018.
