Concerns Grow Over LED Lighting's Impact on Metabolism and Sleep

A growing number of health influencers and some experts are expressing concerns about the potential negative impacts of LED light bulbs on human metabolism, sleep patterns, and overall health. This sentiment has led some individuals to revert to older incandescent lighting technologies, which they refer to as 'freedom lights'.

These concerns suggest that the blue-rich light emitted by LEDs may disrupt the body's natural circadian rhythms, potentially affecting sleep quality. Furthermore, some research hints at a connection between exposure to certain types of artificial light and metabolic issues, including an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Rachel Mitchell, 48, shared her experience, noting that after switching to LED bulbs at home in 2021, along with acquiring an LED computer monitor and an LED television, she began to experience unexplained health issues. She has since begun stockpiling incandescent bulbs, searching for old stock or decommissioned industrial bulbs, and finding them in antique shops.

While scientific understanding of light's effect on health is still evolving, some studies have indicated that a low exposure to specific light wavelengths could be linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, anxiety, premature skin aging, obesity, and certain cancers. Advocates for incandescent lighting suggest that these bulbs emit light with a warmer spectrum that may be less disruptive to biological processes.

Science is only beginning to reveal just how vital this long-wavelength light is for health, but studies have linked low exposure to type 2 diabetes, anxiety, skin ageing, obesity and cancer

The trend appears to be a departure from previous health fads, focusing instead on environmental factors within the home. The shift back to incandescent bulbs is seen by proponents as a move towards prioritizing natural biological functions over modern lighting technology.
