Cold Hands Could Be Early Sign of Life-Threatening Autoimmune Disease, Experts Warn

What may appear to be a simple quirk, like having perpetually cold hands, could be an early indicator of a life-threatening autoimmune condition, according to health experts. Many cases of these serious illnesses are being missed, as initial symptoms can be subtle and easily overlooked.

Beth Smith recalled experiencing unusually cold hands from a young age. She found she could handle items straight from the microwave or hold hot drinks without discomfort due to the low temperature of her extremities. As she grew older, her cold hands became more concerning. Around the age of ten, her fingers began to change color, turning white seemingly at random.

Eventually, Beth was informed that she likely had Raynaud's phenomenon. This is a common condition where small blood vessels in the fingers and toes temporarily spasm, leading to reduced blood flow and the characteristic painfully cold hands.

While Raynaud's itself can be a nuisance, it can also be a symptom of more severe underlying autoimmune diseases. These conditions can affect various organs and systems in the body and, if left untreated, can become life-threatening. Experts emphasize the importance of seeking medical advice if symptoms like persistent coldness or discoloration of the extremities are experienced, to ensure proper diagnosis and management of any potential underlying health issues.
