Cheltenham General Hospital's Accident and Emergency (A&E) department is set to implement significant changes, including a temporary closure to overnight services, as doctors engage in strike action. The hospital announced that its A&E will close on Sunday at 8:00 PM BST and will reopen on Monday as a Minor Injury and Illness Unit (MIIU). Normal overnight A&E services are scheduled to resume on Friday.
This modification is a direct consequence of the latest strike action by resident doctors, who are in a protracted dispute with the government over pay. Health officials have cautioned that the strike action is expected to create substantial challenges for the local National Health Service (NHS), particularly impacting hospital services.
Patients are being advised to seek emergency care at the A&E only for conditions that are life-threatening or serious. The shift to a daytime-only MIIU highlights the strain placed on healthcare facilities during periods of industrial action.
Dr. Ananthakrishnan Raghuram, chief clinical leadership and delivery officer at NHS Gloucestershire, stated that the strike action "is likely to pose significant challenges to the local NHS, particularly hospital services."
The temporary alteration to services underscores the ongoing impact of the doctors' strike on patient care and hospital operations.
