The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province, a popular tourist destination, amid an ongoing outbreak of the chikungunya virus. The warning advises travelers to enhance their protection against mosquito bites.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that typically causes fever and severe joint pain, with symptoms appearing three to seven days after an infected mosquito bite. Other common symptoms include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. While most individuals recover within a week, the CDC notes that some can experience debilitating joint pain for months or even years following the initial illness.

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya, making prevention the primary method of avoiding infection. Health authorities recommend measures such as using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, and staying in accommodations equipped with air conditioning or effective window screens. Vaccination is also suggested for eligible travelers visiting outbreak areas.

The outbreak has been concentrated in Playa Langosta, a well-known beach area within Guanacaste, known for its beaches, surfing, and hiking opportunities. Costa Rica's Ministry of Health has reported four confirmed cases and identified 17 probable cases linked to the outbreak. Both local residents and foreign visitors are among those under investigation.

In an effort to control the spread, specialized teams have been conducting fumigation of approximately 5,000 homes and working to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The CDC also advises pregnant women, particularly those nearing their due date, to reconsider travel to the affected region due to the risk of transmitting the virus to newborns during childbirth.

Travelers who develop symptoms such as fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or a rash during or after their trip are advised to seek medical attention.

This advisory for Costa Rica follows a series of similar chikungunya-related travel alerts issued by the CDC for other regions. Previously, the agency issued Level 2 advisories for Bolivia, the Seychelles, Cuba, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and China's Guangdong Province due to chikungunya outbreaks in those areas.
