The average penis size, based on analyses of multiple studies, is approximately 3.63 inches in length and 3.58 inches in girth when flaccid, according to medical reviews. When erect, the average penis measures about 5.45 inches in length and 4.69 inches in girth.

These findings suggest a significant discrepancy between perceived and actual average sizes, with men often exaggerating their measurements. One study indicated that men tend to overestimate their penis length by about 20%. Certified sex and couples therapist Vanessa Cushing noted that men frequently believe the average is much larger, often between 6.5 to 7 inches. This perception, she explained, can stem from cultural links between penis size and masculinity, worth, and sexual ability, leading to unrealistic expectations often shaped by pornography and locker-room talk.

This discrepancy can contribute to feelings of inadequacy, performance anxiety, and body dysmorphic disorder concerning penis size. A 2019 survey in the US found that around 26.4% of men were dissatisfied with their penis size. Globally, a 2015 survey revealed that only 55% of men reported satisfaction with their size.

Anxiety about penis size and related disorders have been linked to higher rates of erectile dysfunction and lower satisfaction with sexual intercourse. Conversely, research suggests that women generally place less importance on penis size than men might assume. Studies indicate that about 85% of women are satisfied with their partner's penis size, while a larger percentage of men report a desire for a larger penis.

Therapists suggest focusing on anatomy over depth, as the majority of sensitive nerve endings in the vagina are located within the first few inches. They also recommend auditing media consumption to reset realistic expectations and shifting focus from sexual performance to overall connection and sensory touch. Communication, arousal, and emotional presence are highlighted as key factors for sexual pleasure, rather than solely penis length.
