Women in their thirties should be alerted to the potential link between moderate alcohol consumption and an increased risk of breast cancer, especially if they are also experiencing weight gain, according to new research. The study, led by experts at Imperial College London, highlights that certain lifestyle factors become more impactful at specific life stages.

While women in their twenties may consume more alcohol overall, the combination of drinking and excess weight during their thirties presents a heightened risk. This finding comes amid a nearly 10 percent increase in breast cancer cases among women aged 20 to 49 over the past decade.

Professor Marc Gunter, the study's lead author, emphasized the importance of tailoring health messaging to critical periods in women's lives when habits tend to change. "Adolescence and early adulthood may be a particularly important time to encourage physical activity and help prevent rapid weight gain," he stated. "Meanwhile, the 30s to 50s are crucial for tackling creeping body weight and curbing increases in alcohol consumption."

The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, analyzed data from over 110,000 women participating in the Breast Cancer Now Generations Study. It tracked how major breast cancer risk factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, and weight, evolved with age.

Key findings indicated that while drinking, smoking, and exercise habits tend to peak in late adolescence, body fat steadily increases throughout adulthood. Obesity is a known risk factor for numerous cancers, including breast, bowel, liver, and pancreatic cancer. Fat cells produce aromatase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels can promote cell division and multiplication, thereby increasing cancer risk, a phenomenon particularly potent after menopause.

Obesity in post-menopausal women is associated with a 30 percent higher risk of breast cancer compared to non-obese women. The Imperial team also observed that women aged 23-66 generally maintain a higher Body Mass Index (BMI) throughout life and exhibit earlier peaks in drinking and smoking compared to women over 67.

Alcohol's impact on cancer risk is multifaceted. Its breakdown in the body produces acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that can damage DNA and lead to mutations. Alcohol also elevates estrogen levels, potentially encouraging tumor growth, and can amplify the harmful effects of other carcinogens, such as those found in tobacco.

Even one glass of wine per night, equivalent to one to two units of alcohol, has been shown to increase breast cancer risk by 15 percent. This risk escalates by an additional 10 percent for each subsequent daily drink.

Professor Amy Berrington, a researcher from The Institute of Cancer Research involved in the study, suggested that warning women about age-specific alcohol-related risks could yield broader public health benefits, potentially preventing other diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. "Public health strategies would have a much broader impact on women’s health," she noted.

In the UK, approximately 59,000 new cases of breast cancer occur annually in women, with about 420 in men. Major signs of breast cancer include a lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest, or armpit, changes in breast skin texture or appearance, alterations in breast size or shape, and nipple discharge. While there is no single cause, known risk factors include age, family history, alcohol consumption, smoking, being overweight, certain hormonal therapies, and breast density. Women in the UK are typically invited for NHS screening every three years starting at age 50.
