‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Recap: A Plot to End a Bloodline Unfolds

The latest episode of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” titled “Small Mercies,” escalates the season’s conflicts, focusing on Lord Lovat’s machinations and the dire consequences for several key characters.

Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Davina Porter (Sara Vickers) deal with the aftermath of Seema’s (Lauren McQueen) death, with Julia showing unexpected pity for the fallen foe. Meanwhile, at Leoch, a distraught Grace (Ruby Fubara) reports Ellen’s (Harriet Slater) abduction to Colum (Seamus McLean Ross) and Ned (Conor MacNeill). Colum exhibits more concern about the potential loss of Leoch to the British than his sister’s safety, a reaction that horrifies Ned.

Lord Lovat, revealed to be at Leathers, confronts Julia and Davina about Seema’s disappearance. He summons them to prepare for a guest, who turns out to be Ellen. Lovat claims he rescued Ellen from MacKinney, but Ellen accuses him of being a traitor. Despite her accusations, Lovat seems intrigued by her defiance and apologizes, inviting her to stay for a meal. This forced reunion also brings Ellen and Julia together, though they maintain they are mere acquaintances. Lovat, toasting the families, compares the Frasers and MacKenzies to the Montagues and Capulets, hinting at his manipulative intent.

A Captivity and a Betrayal

At the Mackenzie camp, survivors of the Battle of Sheriffmuir mourn their dead. John Cameron (Alastair Mackenzie) returns with news that Dougal (Sam Retford) and Angus have been captured by Redcoats. Dougal is subjected to brutal interrogation at Fort William by Captain Lord Gerard Grey (Digby Edgley), who employs a new recruit, Black Jack Randall (Finley Glasgow), to inflict further torture. Lord John Grey intervenes, ordering Randall to stop and sending Dougal to a vault.

Colum, again, refuses to mount a rescue, claiming he is protecting the clan. Ned expresses his disgust at this decision.

Ellen, meanwhile, feels unwell after Lovat encourages her to drink spiced wine. Maisri (Katharine O’Donnelly) recites a seemingly ominous message: “Life’s promise holds fast, but death’s call must be answered.” As Ellen experiences cramps, it becomes apparent that her unborn child is in danger.

Dougal and Angus, trapped in a tide-dependent vault, discuss Rupert’s death. Their conversation is cut short by the rising tide. Fortunately, Brian (Jamie Roy) and Murtagh (Rory Alexander) infiltrate Fort William to rescue them.

Julia and Ellen realize the wine was poisoned, causing their symptoms. Julia confronts Lovat, who admits to having Maisri administer a potion intended to end both their pregnancies, ensuring a prophecy about young Simon/William becoming king would be fulfilled without heirs from the Lovat line. Julia informs a devastated Ellen, who believes she has miscarried and insists on returning to Leoch.

Brian and Murtagh find Dougal and Angus just as they are about to drown. Unable to unlock the vault, they use a wall torch to break through. Dougal escapes, but Angus drowns. They encounter a young Black Jack Randall during their escape. Dougal is about to kill him, but Brian intervenes, recognizing his youth and sparing his life—a decision that will weigh heavily on Brian.

Aftermath and Hope

Ellen is brought back to Leoch, where Mrs. Fitz (Sally Messham) and Jocasta (Sadhbh Malin) tend to her. Mrs. Fitz reveals Ellen was at Castle Leathers, leaving Colum to suspect Brian’s involvement in his father’s actions.

The episode concludes with a moment of hope as Arch Bug (Terence Rae) facilitates a connection between Henry (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia. They plan to exchange letters hidden in a stone “postbox” until Henry can gather enough gemstones to return to their time. While Claire’s parents find a glimmer of hope, Jamie’s parents face heartbreak. Lovat’s plot to prevent heirs is thwarted, and with Ellen’s loss, the theory that Ellen and Brian might adopt William gains plausibility.
