Will 'Gladiator 3' Happen? Sequel's Streaming Success Sparks Discussion
Despite a modest box office performance, 'Gladiator II' is finding a new audience on Netflix, leading to questions about a potential third installment.

Ridley Scott's 2024 sequel, "Gladiator II," is experiencing a resurgence in popularity on Netflix, prompting discussions about the possibility of a third film in the franchise. Two years after its theatrical release, the sequel, along with the original "Gladiator," climbed to the top of Netflix's trending titles list shortly after its addition to the streaming platform.
Directed again by Scott, "Gladiator II" features a new cast, with Paul Mescal portraying Lucius Verus, the adult nephew of Emperor Commodus. The film also stars Pedro Pascal as General Marcus Acacius and Denzel Washington as Macrinus, who serves as a mentor to Mescal's character.
"Gladiator II" grossed $460.3 million worldwide against a production budget of $250 million. While this performance nearly doubled its production costs and significantly outperformed Scott's more recent film, "The Dog Stars," it fell short of becoming one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2024. Rumors circulated that Scott attributed the box office results to star Paul Mescal's perceived lack of masculinity, claims that Scott's representatives denied.
Regarding a potential "Gladiator 3," there has been no official confirmation. However, Ridley Scott has indicated that he is working on a script. In 2024, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he was eager to move forward with "Gladiator III" and that an idea was already in development, drawing inspiration from "The Godfather Part II." Scott also previously responded to a user question by stating that "Gladiator is in process right now."
Despite these statements, Scott is 88 years old, and the last update on "Gladiator 3" came in August 2025. Furthermore, star Paul Mescal has expressed reservations about undertaking another large-scale production akin to "Gladiator II." Mescal told The Guardian that while he enjoyed the filming process, he felt more comfortable with smaller projects like "The History of Sound" and prefers to focus on films of that scale over massive blockbusters. He also mentioned a desire for a break from major projects until his involvement in Sam Mendes's upcoming Beatles biopic, potentially delaying any further "Gladiator" installments until after 2028.
As of now, there is no release date for "Gladiator 3," and its production status remains uncertain. Even if production were to begin in the near future, given the timeline of the second film's release post-production, the earliest a potential "Gladiator 3" could surface would be 2028, assuming it gets greenlit. The success of "Gladiator II" on Netflix might influence a decision, but for now, the future of the franchise remains speculative.
