Actress Wai Ching Ho, known for her roles in Marvel's "Iron Fist," "Daredevil," and "The Defenders," as well as the film "Hustlers," has died at the age of 82. Her career spanned decades, including appearances on "One Life to Live" and "Flight of the Conchords."
Mourning her passing, former castmates have paid tribute to Ho, describing her as a "stellar artist" and a "pillar" both on and off screen. Actor Peter Shinkoda shared on Instagram that he "learned every minute" from Ho and that they would "meet again."
Filmmaker Judy Lei recalled Ho's kindness and generosity when she played a Chinese school teacher in Lei's first film in 2019. Despite a last-minute change in filming location, Ho arrived prepared and even brought her own outfit, demonstrating grace even when Lei forgot to have her sign necessary paperwork. Lei remembered Ho's role as Grandma in "Children of Invention," noting her character's protective nature.
Actress Mahira Kakkar, who shared a dressing room with Ho, described her as "incredible—warm, funny, caring, joyful, positive and a truly wonderful actor." Kakkar highlighted Ho's performance in a lead role at age 82 or 83, comparing it to a female King Lear. Ho would offer advice to colleagues, recommending daily consumption of raw ginger to stay healthy. Kakkar stated that Ho served as a crucial role model for those in the industry who lacked mentors, adding that Ho "utterly refused to speak ill of anyone."
News of Ho's death was reportedly first shared by her colleagues. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Representatives for Wai Ching Ho did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
