Viewers of the MTV Video Music Awards have urged organizers to "pull the plug" on the annual event, citing a series of problems and a perceived decline in viewer engagement. Many took to social media platform X to voice their dissatisfaction, with comments ranging from "this sh** is boring" to the assertion that the VMAs "have felt like a funeral for years."
This year's ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, was marred from its outset by a significant technical issue. Fans attempting to watch the show's opening were met with the Cowboys vs. Ravens NFL game instead. The official VMAs X account posted an update explaining the delay, stating, "The 2026 #VMAs will take off after the football game finishes. Live, coming up on CBS and streaming on Paramount+!" The awards show did not begin airing until approximately 7:50 p.m. PT, nearly 20 minutes late, after the initial performance had concluded and the first award had already been presented.
The broadcast also saw the absence of several high-profile artists, including Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and Olivia Rodrigo. Further criticism was directed at Madonna's performance, which some viewers described as "utterly unfocused," with accusations of lip-syncing and concerns about her appearing out of breath. Later in the evening, Madonna appeared to forget what award she was presenting, eliciting a reaction from presenters Charli XCX and Troye Sivan before making a peculiar comment about a laser "stuck" up her posterior.
