UK Experiences Sauna Boom, With Locations Tripling Amid Health and Social Trends

Britain is in the midst of a significant rise in sauna popularity, with the number of available locations more than tripling in the latter half of last year. The British Sauna Society reported an increase from approximately 200 to over 600 establishments. This trend is fueled by a greater public understanding of the wellness advantages offered by saunas, including muscle relaxation, improved blood circulation, and immune system support.

Beyond physical health, saunas are also emerging as social hubs, offering opportunities for community connection. This combination of health and social benefits has spurred what some are calling 'sauna mania' across the nation.

A Nationwide Exploration

The burgeoning popularity prompted an extensive investigation into the country's sauna offerings. One writer documented visiting 60 saunas in a single month, traveling from the Scottish Highlands to Cornwall, to understand the phenomenon and identify the most noteworthy locations. This journey revealed a nationwide trend towards these wellness spaces.

Notable Sauna Destinations

Norwich: The Lions Den, with a branch situated by the River Wensum, provides a secluded urban retreat. This community-focused establishment offers affordable sessions, including access to cold baths.

Hackney, London: Community Sauna Baths, London's largest not-for-profit sauna company, started in Hackney in 2021. Located in the garden of a 1930s public baths building, it features seven saunas and emphasizes a welcoming atmosphere.

Margate: Sea Scrub Sauna, positioned directly on the sand, offers ocean views. The site includes two saunas, an outdoor shower, and cold-water barrels, providing an invigorating experience with the option of a sea dip.

Brighton: Beach Box Brighton, established in 2018, consists of several repurposed structures arranged in a circle on the beach. It offers a close proximity to the sea for cold dips, alongside cold-water tubs and relaxation areas.

Newquay: Saunassa has become a community hub, offering a large wood-fired sauna, hot tubs, and cold baths in an open-air yard. It also provides yoga classes, prioritizing mental well-being.

Lake District: Fellside Sauna, located on the banks of Ullswater, boasts impressive views of the surrounding mountains. It is praised for providing a stunning setting for both sauna use and cold-water swimming in the lake.

Near York: Pool Bridge Farm offers a collection of five saunas, some housed in repurposed structures. These saunas are adjacent to lakes, allowing for immediate cold-water swimming or floating post-session.

Luss, Scotland: Hot Tottie, situated by Loch Lomond, is described as a quaint barrel sauna with a view framing Ben Lomond. It offers a tranquil setting for relaxation and a subsequent swim in the loch.
