Turner Prize Exhibition to Open at Teesside University's MIMA
Works by four shortlisted artists will be displayed starting September 26.
Artwork by four artists nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize will be showcased at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), a venue part of Teesside University. The exhibition opens on September 26, featuring works by Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau, and Tanoa Sasraku.
Dr. Laura Sillars, director of MIMA and dean of culture and creativity at Teesside University, described the exhibition as a "prestigious opportunity," stating that while the artworks are at MIMA, the institution is "the centre of the creative universe."
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke highlighted the exhibition's significance for the local community, calling it an "incredible opportunity" for residents to engage with "with cutting-edge art in their home town." He expressed hope that the exhibition will inspire young people and showcase the region's cultural offerings to a national audience.
The Turner Prize, established in 1984 and named after the English Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner, is recognized as one of the most esteemed awards in visual arts. It is presented annually to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or presentation of their work. The winner, to be announced on December 10, will receive £25,000, with the remaining shortlisted artists each receiving £10,000.
